2026 TANGO BA DANCE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP REGULATIONS The Ministry of Culture of the Government of the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires announces the 2026 Dance World Championship, to be held from August 19 to September 2, 2026, as part of the Tango Buenos Aires Festival and World Championship in the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires, in accordance with these regulations. Activities will begin on August 19 with the opening of the Festival; couple registration and credentialing will take place between August 20 and 22; and the World Championship competition will commence on August 23. The 2026 Dance World Championship (“THE CHAMPIONSHIP”) comprises the following categories: Tango de Pista (Salon Tango) and Tango Escenario (Stage Tango). Participation in both categories and styles is open to all—amateurs and professionals alike—and is free of charge.
ORGANIZATION Regarding the organization, programming, and execution of the 2026 Dance World Championship, the ultimate authority shall be the General Directorate of Festivals and Cultural Nights (DGFNC), under the Undersecretariat of Cultural Management of the Ministry of Culture of the Government of the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires (hereinafter, “The Organization”). It shall be responsible for ensuring compliance with all provisions of these regulations. The DGFNC reserves the right to record all stages of THE CHAMPIONSHIP, either directly or through authorized third parties, using any technical means, medium, or format—whether currently known or developed in the future— including, among others, filming, live streaming, recording, photography, digitization, and other audiovisual and/or technological means, for purposes of dissemination, institutional communication, cultural promotion, historical archiving, and publicizing activities linked to THE CHAMPIONSHIP and/or actions carried out by the DGFNC. The resulting recordings shall be the property of the DGFNC. Registration for THE CHAMPIONSHIP implies the registrants' express and irrevocable authorization for the use of the recordings made, without this implying—or giving rise to any expectation of—payment of any kind by the DGFNC to any person or organization claiming rights over the material. This clause also includes, without restriction, photographic material published and/or used for promotion, advertising, or any other purpose deemed appropriate. The following are ineligible to compete in THE CHAMPIONSHIP: DGFNC personnel; members of the organization, producers, and judges of Official Preliminaries; and staff members and artists hired by the organization of the Tango Buenos Aires Festival and World Championship 2026; sponsors and/or personnel of companies sponsoring the Tango Buenos Aires Festival and World Championship, or any person maintaining an ongoing relationship with the DGFNC. The Organization designates the website www.tangoba.org as the official communication channel for the event, without precluding other forms of promotion.
REGISTRATION Participation in the 2026 Dance World Championship is free of charge. Registration may be completed via the official website, www.tangoba.org, between July 13 and August 6, 2026 (inclusive); the Organization reserves the right to extend this deadline should it deem necessary. Participating couples may consist of individuals of any nationality and gender who are over the age of EIGHTEEN (18) as of the date of registration for the CHAMPIONSHIP (July 13, 2026). Each individual may register only once per category, though they may compete in each category with the same partner or a different one. Each couple shall represent a specific city. If the partners reside in different cities, the couple must choose to represent the city of residence or the city of birth of one of the partners. Notwithstanding the foregoing, if one partner is Argentine and the other is a foreign national, they may represent a foreign city only if both can prove actual residence in that city. ...city for a minimum of TWO (2) years prior to the registration date, as evidenced by documentation specified by the Organization. Otherwise, they must represent the Argentine Republic. Couples competing in the Stage Tango category must provide the title and version of the musical piece they intend to dance to, as well as the name of the choreographer. On the day of accreditation, they must provide the Organization with a flash drive containing the high-quality recorded version. Upon online registration, all participants must complete the form and attach the required documentation, which must be presented both at the in-person accreditation and during the competition. Once online registration is complete, the Organization will send a pre-registration confirmation via email. Subsequently, the submitted documentation and information will be verified and validated; once approved, instructions regarding in-person accreditation will be provided. Expired documents, certificates indicating that an ID card or passport is being processed, and police reports regarding theft will not be accepted. For Argentine participants, the only valid ID is the new card-style document or the current digital format via the official "MI ARGENTINA" app. All data and documentation provided during the registration and accreditation process shall be deemed a sworn statement. Any falsehood, omission, or inconsistency in the information submitted may result in the rejection of the registration, disqualification from the competition, or loss of participant status, without prejudice to any other applicable measures.
REGISTRATION AND CHECK-IN To participate in THE CHAMPIONSHIP, all registered couples must appear for the check-in process. This will take place in person on the date, at the time, and at the location determined and announced by the Organization through the designated channels. During this process, couples will be assigned a registration number and informed of the estimated dates and times for their performances in the qualifying round. Registered couples who fail to appear for check-in at their assigned time and date will not be permitted to participate in THE CHAMPIONSHIP. However, the Organization may accept exceptional situations that are duly justified and documented—including cases of force majeure or widely known public circumstances—provided that doing so does not disrupt the normal conduct of the competition. At the time of check-in, couples participating in the Stage Tango (*Tango Escenario*) category must provide the Organization with a USB flash drive containing a high-quality recording of the music track they intend to dance to. THE COMPETITION Couples participating in the Social Tango (*Tango de Pista*) category will compete in group sessions and dance in rounds consisting of THREE (3) recorded tracks selected by the Organization. The Organization reserves the exclusive right to establish—and, when necessary due to artistic, technical, operational, or force majeure reasons, to modify—the performance order, schedule, and participation format for the couples during any stage of THE CHAMPIONSHIP. In the Stage Tango (*Tango Escenario*) category, each couple will compete individually, dancing to a track of their choice that must not exceed FOUR (4) minutes in duration. Couples must specify their chosen track during the online registration process. Couples may present different choreographies in the various stages of the competition, provided they continue to meet the technical and regulatory requirements established by the Organization. The championship will be conducted in four stages for both categories: a) Qualifying, b) Quarter-finals, c) Semi-finals, d) Final.
The Organization shall not be held liable for any delays or unforeseen events that may arise, for any reason, during the presentation of the various participants in the different rounds. QUALIFYING ROUND Each couple will dance only once. Couples will be distributed across two days, with two blocks each, comprising several dance rounds. In the Tango de Pista (Social Tango) category, THREE HUNDRED (300) couples will advance to the quarter-final round. These will be the couples whose average scores fall within the top FIFTY percent (50%) of each block in the qualifying round. In the Tango Escenario (Stage Tango) category, NINETY (90) couples will advance to the quarter-final round. These will be the couples whose average scores fall within the top FIFTY percent (50%) of each block in the qualifying round. QUARTER-FINALS Participants in this round will be distributed into two blocks: • In the Tango de Pista category: the THREE HUNDRED (300) couples qualified in the qualifying round. • In the Tango Escenario category: the NINETY (90) couples qualified in the qualifying round. • Couples who won the various Official Preliminaries for the 2026 Tango Buenos Aires Festival and World Championship, qualified in accordance with the 2026 Preliminaries Regulations. • Couples who placed fourth (4th) and fifth (5th) in the Adult and Senior Tango de Pista categories at the 2026 City Dance Championship. SEMIFINALS Participants in this round will be: • In the Tango de Pista category: the ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY (150) couples qualified in the quarter-final round. • In the Tango Escenario category: the FORTY-FIVE (45) couples qualified in the quarter-final round. • Winning couples from the various Official Preliminaries of the 2026 Tango Buenos Aires Festival and World Championship, qualified in accordance with the 2026 Preliminaries Regulations. • Couples placing second (2nd) and third (3rd) in the Adult and Senior Tango de Pista (Salon Tango) categories of the 2026 City Dance Championship. • Winning couples in the Adult and Senior Milongueros del Mundo categories of the 2026 City Dance Championship. • Couples placing second (2nd) and third (3rd) in the Tango Escenario (Stage Tango) category of the 2026 City Dance Championship.
FINAL The following will participate in this stage: • The thirty-six (36) highest-scoring couples from the Tango de Pista (Social Tango) Semifinal. • The seventeen (17) highest-scoring couples from the Tango Escenario (Stage Tango) Semifinal. • The winning couples from the European Championship and the Asian Championship (Official Preliminaries for the 2026 Tango BA Festival and Dance World Cup). • The winning couples in the Adult and Senior Tango de Pista categories of the 2026 City Dance Championship. • The winning couple in the Tango Escenario category of the 2026 City Dance Championship. The performance order for the Tango Escenario Final will be determined by a draw held on the day of the Final, in the presence of a public notary and the participating couples.
Please note that couples presenting the same dance track may not perform consecutively. In the event of a tie for first place, the tied couples must dance as many additional tracks as necessary until the judges' vote yields a winner; participants may not refuse to perform these additional dances. The scores obtained by each couple during the competition will be made public after the conclusion of each stage. The judges' decision during the Final will determine a winning couple in each category. This decision will be recorded on official score sheets, certified by a Notary Public present at the event, and subsequently formalized in an official record. BEST SENIOR COUPLE AWARD As part of the Dance World Championship, a special award will be presented to participating couples aged fifty-five (55) or older. To this end, a "Senior Floor" round will be held as part of the Salon Tango (Tango de Pista) Final. The selected couples will dance to three (3) tracks chosen by the organizers. A "Senior Couple" is defined as a couple in which both partners have reached the age of fifty-five (55) by August 20, 2026. Participation in the "Best Senior Couple" round is optional. The nine (9) highest-ranked Senior couples from the 2026 Dance World Championship Salon Tango semifinal will qualify to participate in the final round. In the event that nine (9) couples aged fifty-five (55) or older do not reach the semifinal stage... ...or if the qualified couples choose not to participate, the spots will be filled based on the rankings from the quarter-final stage—or, failing that, the qualifying stage—of the 2026 World Dance Championship’s Tango de Pista category. Joining these NINE (9) participating couples will be the winning couple from the Senior Tango de Pista category of the 2026 City Dance Championship.
SCORING SYSTEM Trimmed Scoring System: To ensure maximum impartiality, scores will be calculated as follows: A) Identifying extremes: From the total scores awarded by the judges to a couple in a round, the computer system will automatically detect the highest and lowest scores. B) Eliminating scores: Both scores (the highest and the lowest) will be discarded and will not be included in the final sum. C) Final average: The couple's definitive score will be the result of summing the remaining scores and dividing that total by the number of judges whose scores were counted. D) Duplicate scores: If the highest or lowest score was awarded by more than one judge, only ONE (1) of those scores will be eliminated for the corresponding extreme. THE JURY Judges will be appointed by the competition organizers and must be professionals with a recognized track record in the field of tango dance, possessing artistic experience, training, and/or research background related to the discipline. The selection process will aim to reflect the diversity of styles, backgrounds, and perspectives within the dance, ensuring a multifaceted evaluation across the various stages of the competition. In both categories, the jury for the qualifying round and the Quarter-Finals will consist of FIVE (5) members; for the Semi-Finals, it will consist of SIX (6) members; and for the Final, it will consist of SEVEN (7) members. Jury decisions are final and not subject to appeal. By the mere act of registering, participants accept this condition. In the event of any doubt or disagreement, the interested party may...
Submit a written presentation (in Spanish or English) to THE ORGANIZATION and NOT directly to the judging panel. The score for each presentation will be based on the cumulative points awarded by each judge, on a general scale of FIVE (5) to TEN (10), with decimals. Each stage uses a segment of this scale, according to the following scoring parameters: • Qualifying Rounds: FIVE (5) to EIGHT (8). • Quarterfinals: FIVE (5) to EIGHT (8). • Semifinals: SIX (6) to NINE (9). • Final: SEVEN (7) to TEN (10). The final score will be calculated as the average of the individual scores given by the judges. In case of a conflict of interest, a judge may abstain from scoring. In such a case, the organization will arrange for the intervention of a substitute jury member, whose score will replace, for all purposes, the score not issued by the jury member who recused themselves due to a conflict of interest. INCOMPATIBILITIES: The following are incompatible: a) Winning the title of Champion at the 2026 World Championship does not automatically qualify one to serve as a jury member. They may be summoned starting September 3, 2028. b) In order to ensure clarity of roles, any person who has served as a jury member or observer at any stage of the competition must wait at least one full year before participating as a competitor. Similarly, a participant summoned as a jury member or observer must observe the same waiting period before or after their participation as a competitor. c) Individuals with direct commercial ties to the competition as sponsors or representatives of sponsoring brands may not serve on the jury, in order to avoid potential conflicts of interest. OBSERVERS The Observer will be responsible for ensuring compliance with these Regulations. Furthermore, in conjunction with the DGFNC, they will participate in resolving any unforeseen situation that may arise during the competition. The DGFNC will establish or communicate any clarifying or interpretive rules to these Regulations that it deems necessary. COMPETITION (EVALUATION PARAMETERS) TANGO DE PISTA (FREE, AMATEUR, AND PROFESSIONAL)
"Tango de Pista" (Social Tango) is understood as a social dance where improvisation, the embrace, and the connection between the partners are paramount. Couples registered in the Tango de Pista category will dance in rounds and—just as on a social dance floor—must move constantly in a counter-clockwise direction without moving backward. Within the round, the couple must be aware of and respect their own space as well as that of the other participants, so as not to disrupt the harmonious flow of movement. Once formed, the couple may not separate while the music is playing. For the position to be considered correct, one partner's body must be contained at all times by the other's embrace, with the understanding that—in certain figures—this connection may be elastic. All movements and figures must be executed within the space defined by the embrace between the partners, so as not to interfere with surrounding couples. Couples may perform any figures commonly used in "social" tango—including barridas (sweeps), sacadas al piso (ground-level displacements), enrosques (twists/coils), lápices (pencil turns), ganchos (hooks), boleos, etc., as well as embellishments—provided they remain within their own space and do not invade or obstruct the space of surrounding couples. Jumps, figures involving the loss of contact between both feet and the floor, and other choreographic elements typical of "Stage Tango" (*Tango Escenario*) are strictly prohibited. The Jury will consider each couple's personal interpretation of the various styles as a fundamental criterion. Factors to be evaluated include musicality, floorcraft (movement around the dance floor), style, the embrace, communication and connection between partners, and the development of a unique personality, while varying dynamics and speed in relation to the music being played and respecting its interpretation. Attire will not be a criterion for evaluation, though contestants are encouraged to present themselves well for their performances. When choosing their attire, hair, and makeup, it is important for couples to remember that Tango de Pista is a social dance, not a stage performance.
TANGO ESCENARIO (LIBRE, AFICIONADOS Y PROFESIONALES) Cada pareja hará una presentación individual con un tema elegido libremente cuya duración no deberá exceder los CUATRO (4’) minutos. En caso de sufrir un problema en la coreografía, quedará a criterio de la pareja continuar con la misma y el jurado evaluará cómo se resuelve el inconveniente, pero no podrá ser repetida. Ante un problema técnico, la Organización junto con el Jurado evaluará la repetición de la coreografía al final de la franja horaria asignada. Se podrá bailar de acuerdo con la visión particular que cada intérprete tiene de la danza del Tango Argentino, entendiéndose por esto que estará permitido utilizar movimientos, figuras y aplicaciones que no refieran directamente al Tango tradicional. Para la evaluación de los participantes, el Jurado tendrá en cuenta los siguientes aspectos: • Composición coreográfica • Musicalidad • Creatividad, • Baile: se evalúa la interpretación, la precisión, la claridad y la fluidez de los movimientos, así como el dominio de las técnicas específicas del estilo de baile tango. • Vestuario. Podrá romperse el abrazo y utilizar técnicas que sean aporte de otras disciplinas de danza, siempre y cuando tengan razón de ser y se realicen en beneficio de la presentación del intérprete. Los trucos aéreos y demás movimientos propios de otras danzas no deben ser excesivos, entendiéndose por esto que no deben superar la tercera parte de la interpretación. DE LOS PREMIOS El promedio obtenido del puntaje emitido por el Jurado, en la Final, arrojará, en cada categoría, una pareja ganadora. También otorgará premios y menciones para el segundo, tercero, cuarto y quinto puesto; y estará facultado para realizar otras menciones en la medida en la que lo crea conveniente. Cada categoría del Mundial de Baile 2026 tendrá una pareja ganadora. El primer premio de cada categoría será de PESOS ARGENTINOS SEIS MILLONES ($6.000.000,00.- ). Se abonarán PESOS ARGENTINOS TRES MILLONES ($3.000.000,00.-) a cada integrante de la pareja ganadora. El premio de la mejor pareja Senior será de PESOS ARGENTINOS CUATRO MILLONES ($4.000.000,00.-). También habrá premios y menciones especiales para los segundos, terceros, cuartos y quintos puestos de ambas categorías. Todos los concursantes recibirán un certificado digital por su participación en el Mundial de Baile 2026. Los premios serán abonados mediante transferencia bancaria a través de la Tesorería del Gobierno de la Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires. A tales efectos, y sin excepción, cada integrante de la pareja ganadora debe ser titular de una cuenta bancaria a su nombre habilitada para la recepción de transferencias de dinero dentro del sistema bancarizado en el territorio argentino. En el caso de participantes extranjeros que no cuenten con una cuenta bancaria en la República Argentina, podrán designar un apoderado con facultades suficientes para la percepción del premio, conforme el The procedure and documentation established by the Organization must be submitted within thirty (30) calendar days from the end of the competition and releases the Organization and the Government of the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires from any claim related to payment. It is hereby noted that the Government of the City of Buenos Aires is a withholding agent, and this may imply that withholdings will be made from the prize amount depending on the tax registration of the person receiving the prize for each category. Payment of the prize will be made between thirty (30) and sixty (60) business days from the date the required documentation is submitted and depends on the administrative processes of the Treasury of the Government of the City of Buenos Aires. Registration and subsequent accreditation of each couple implies knowledge and acceptance of these Regulations by each participant in the 2026 World Dance Championship. The Organization will duly resolve any issues not covered by these Regulations and will establish or inform participants about any clarifying or interpretive rules it deems necessary. SANCTIONS The DGFNC is authorized to sanction participants, judges, and observers during the CHAMPIONSHIP who: • a) fail to comply with the regulations; • b) commit any unethical act or improper act that tends to tarnish the image of the CHAMPIONSHIP or cause public displeasure; • c) make, during the competition and within the framework of the event, political or religious statements that, due to their content, manner, or context, are offensive or affect the normal development of the event or the competition; • d) carry out, within the scope of or in connection with the competition, inside or outside its facilities, any act of physical and/or verbal aggression against any person, whether a participant, jury member, staff member, or member of the general public. The sanction may consist of disqualification in the case of participants, and disqualification in the case of jury members and observers; this sanction may be decided at any stage of the competition. This sanction will disqualify participants from competing, and jury members and observers from participating in official competitions for a period of one calendar year from the date of the event that gives rise to the sanction. This includes the National and International Preliminaries that take place during that year. The sanction will be formalized through an administrative record, which will be notified to the interested party. The DGFNC reserves the right to extend the sanction period in applicable cases, due to the seriousness of the offense.
INTERPRETATION OF THE REGULATIONS The DGFNC will duly resolve any issues not covered by these regulations, and will also issue any clarifying or interpretive rules necessary. The DGFNC establishes the website www.tangoba.org as the official means of communication for the CHAMPIONSHIP, without excluding other forms of dissemination. The organizers may modify dates, venues, or formats of the competition due to force majeure, without giving rise to any right to claim. PROTECTION OF PERSONAL DATA The personal data provided by participants will be processed in accordance with Law No. 1,845 on the Protection of Personal Data of the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires. JURISDICTION In case of controversy in the interpretation or implementation of these Regulations, the participants and the Organization will submit to the jurisdiction of the Administrative, Tax and Consumer Relations Courts of the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires, expressly waiving any 8 other jurisdiction that may correspond to them for any reason; For such purposes, they establish their special addresses in the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires at the time of their accreditation, where all notifications that must be made will be considered valid, it being established that the judicial notifications that must be sent to the Government of the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires must be made at Uruguay 458 (Attorney General's Office, Judicial Orders and Summons Department), in accordance with the provisions of article 20 of Law 1,218 of the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires (as amended by Law 6,764) and by Resolution 77/06 of the Attorney General's Office of the City of Buenos Aires.
